Fishery occupies a unique place in the socio-economic life of the people in Tripura. Fish is one of the most important constituents of the diet of people of Tripura. It is not only an important source of protein but also a source of income and employment to the people engaged in this sector. More importantly this is one sector that directly concerns the poor people of the State.
But, the local production is in-sufficient to provide the required quantity of fish to the populace of the State. A lot requires to be done to increase the production. To overcome this scenario and to make the State self-sufficient in fish (based on 13 Kg per capita availability) by 2010-11, the Deptt. of Fisheries started implementation of a 7 (seven) years Perspective Plan in 2004-05.
